In China it is called " winter worm, summer grass " and the " caterpillar mushroom. " In the wild, <a href='/herbals/caterpillar-fungus' style='text-decoration: none'>Cordyceps</a> infects insect larvae and mature insects with its spores. The myceliuim then grows inside the body of the host, eventually killing it. A mushroom then fruits from the body of the dead host, always growing from the insect's head. The small slender fruit body resembles a blade of grass and is a half inch to one and a half inches long. <br> <br> <a href='/herbals/caterpillar-fungus' style='text-decoration: none'>Cordyceps</a> is one of the most valued medicinal fungi in all of Classical Chinese Medicine. Once reserved exclusively for emperors, this versatile mushroom is now the tonic of choice among world-class competitive athletes. <br> <br> <a href='/herbals/caterpillar-fungus' style='text-decoration: none'>Cordyceps</a> attracted public attention when a group of Chinese runners, who reported using <a href='/herbals/caterpillar-fungus' style='text-decoration: none'>Cordyceps</a> extract to enhance endurance and recovery, broke nine world records in the World Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Germany. Modern clinical applications and research closely mirror those uses described in Classical Chinese Medicine. <br> <br> Clinical Research <br> There has been a significant amount of research done on <a href='/herbals/caterpillar-fungus' style='text-decoration: none'>Cordyceps</a>. The myceliuim then grows inside the body of the host, eventually killing it. A mushroom then fruits from the body of the dead host, always growing from the insect's head. Due to Cordyceps' reported platelet aggregation-inhibitory activity,* caution may be advised for those patients using anticoagulants or preparing for surgery.
